چکیده

Shock-capturing finite volume schemes often give rise to anomalous results in hypersonic flow.We present a wideranging survey of numerical experiments from 12 different flux functions in oneand two-dimensional contexts. Included is a recently developed function that satisfies the second law of thermodynamics. It is found here that there are at least two kinds of shock instabilities: one is one-dimensional and the other is multidimensional. According to the results, the former does not appear if a flux function satisfies the second law of thermodynamics, and the latter is suppressed by an additional dissipation with a multidimensional character. However, such dissipation has no effect on the one-dimensional mode. Among the flux functions investigated, no universally stable schemes are found that are free fromboth oneandmultidimensional shock instabilities. The appearance of these instabilities depends on the relative positioning of the shock on the grid.

Evaluation of Euler Fluxes for Hypersonic Heating Computations

In hypersonic flow computations, it is a key issue to predict surface heating accurately, though this is still challenging because there always are possibilities of resulting in anomalous solutions. In this paper, three properties for flux functions are proposed: 1) shock stability/robustness, 2) conservation of total enthalpy, and 3) resolving boundary layer. Then, numerical experiments are pe...

Numerical Simulation of Shock-Wave/Boundary/Layer Interactions in a Hypersonic Compression Corner Flow

Numerical results are presented for the shock-boundary layer interactions in a hypersonic flow over a sharp leading edge compression corner. In this study, a second- order Godunov type scheme based on solving a Generalized Riemann Problem (GRP) at each cell interface is used to solve thin shear layer approximation of laminar Navier-Stokes (N-S) equations. The calculated flow-field shows general...

Approximate Viscous Shock-Layer Analysis of Axisymmetric Bodies in Perfect Gas Hypersonic Flow

In this paper, an approximate axisymmetric method is developed which can reliably calculate fully viscous hypersonic flow over blunt-nosed bodies. In this method, a Maslen’s second-order pressure expression is used instead of the normal momentum equation. The combination of Maslen’s second-order pressure expression and viscous shock layer equations is developed to accurately and efficiently com...

Multiple temperature kinetic model and gas-kinetic method for hypersonic non-equilibrium flow computations

It is well known that for increasingly rarefied flowfields, the predictions from continuum formulation, such as the Navier–Stokes equations lose accuracy. For the high speed diatomic molecular flow in the transitional regime, the inaccuracies are partially attributed to the single temperature approximations in the Navier–Stokes equations. Here, we propose a continuum multiple temperature model ...
